AI is not your sleep coach
Lately, it feels like the internet is doing more and more of our thinking for us. It has always been a place to ask any question to get any answer imaginable, but now it feels more personalized. Like it is a close friend who is talking directly to you. It remains a good place to get general answers (how to find a particular location or how to get that burned on food off the bottom of a pan), but when it comes to truly solving your child’s sleep challenges, it isn’t usually going to do the trick.
AI can be a good tool to get you started with basic sleep info as far as what is typical for children at different ages and stages, but, as we have all experienced, it isn’t always reliable information. Not to mention the fact that there isn’t a one size fits all experience for every child. Even from one child to the next in the same family, there are often vast differences.
AI, and the internet in general, will never truly understand your child’s temperament, challenges and your family’s routines. The kind of guidance that takes these factors into account can only come from a human who has assessed your circumstances and can collaborate with you to determine what will work well for your child and your specific circumstances.
Changing your child’s sleep behavior is often not a linear process. There can be steps forward and backwards along the way. Regressions, travel, illness, teething and other sleep stealers can pop up and derail hard earned progress.
Safety consideration, developmental factors and underlying medical conditions can play a big role in children’s sleep. These are things that I specifically screen for when reviewing a child’s history in order to ensure that we are able to address the behavioral factors without other complications. Or, when necessary, other professionals are engaged to rule out or resolve medical, sensory or behavioral issues.
The bottom line: a trained professional who has experience working with actual human children is always going to do a better job addressing your challenges than AI, no matter how smart it becomes.
